Solidarity shipyard to be sold

| |
Poland's government will sell stakes in three shipyards, including Stocznia Gdansk SA, the birthplace of the Solidarity trade union, by the first half of next year.

Poland plans to find investors by June for Stocznia Gdynia SA, in the Baltic port of Gdynia that lies next to Gdansk, and Stocznia Szczecinska Nowa in the port of Szczecin on the German border, the Treasury Ministry said in a statement.

Lech Walesa, who later became Poland's president, and others at Stocznia Gdansk SA, then known as the Lenin Shipyard, founded Solidarity, the first independent trade union in 1980.
